UK Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy

UK 2018 National Strategy Latest Progress

In April 2018, the UK government announced the AI Sector Deal. This is part of the UK government’s industrial strategy, aimed at positioning the UK as a global leader in artificial intelligence. The deal covers a wide range of areas: promoting public and private R&D, investing in STEM education, improving digital infrastructure, developing AI talent, and leading global dialogue on data ethics. It includes over £300 million for private sector investment from domestic and foreign tech companies, the Alan Turing Institute creating Turing Fellowships, and promoting the Data Ethics and Innovation Centre. The Centre is a key project as the government hopes to lead global governance of AI ethics. The Centre began public consultation in June 2018.

Ten days before the sector deal was announced, the House of Lords Select Committee on AI published a report titled “AI in the UK: ready, willing, and able?”. This report was the result of a 10-month investigation tasked with examining the economic, ethical, and social impacts of AI technology advancement. The report outlined several recommendations for government consideration, including calls to review potential monopolies on data by tech companies, encouraging development of new methods for auditing datasets, and creating a growth fund for UK SMEs working with AI. The report also noted that the UK has an opportunity to lead global AI governance and suggested hosting a global summit in 2019 to establish international norms for AI use and development. In June 2018, the UK government released an official response to the House of Lords, commenting on each recommendation in the report.
